Fun & Funky Finds at KBIS 2018
February 14, 2018KBIS 2018 Spotlight: Best Kitchen
February 28, 2018One of the most engaging “displays” at KBIS 2018 wasn’t a display at all, but a spectacular master bathroom in a home remodeled for this year’s event. Cabinets & Designs president Maria Frank and other attendees were invited to a special meet-and-greet event; Maria came for the Brookhaven by Wood-Mode Custom Cabinetry in the kitchen but was impressed by everything the home had to offer.
“Wood-Mode had the opportunity to provide cabinetry—which turned out beautifully—but it didn’t stop in the kitchen,” said Frank. “The touch-open refrigerator was so cool, and that incredible pool—but the Brookhaven bathroom really made me stop and look around. I took so many photos!”
What makes this bathroom so special? The attention to detail that resulted in lots of design interest. “It’s one of the most beautiful homes I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Maria. “I want that house for myself! You can just tell that a really creative designer thought things through from start to finish, not just from a design perspective but from a living perspective.”
Houston-area Wood-Mode factory representative Tom Steffan and he agrees that the attention to detail was outstanding throughout the KBIS “show home” master bathroom.
“Those design elements are layered, for an ‘in-and-out’ effect,” said Steffan. “It’s not as interesting when everything is on the same plane, so you see around the mirrors they use different thicknesses on the vertical versus the horizontal which creates that ‘in-and-out’ and visual interest.”
Even the color selection was unusual as you can see from the photos. What appears in some shots as grey is really a cool, pale green called “Vintage Deep Ice.” Vintage finishes are more expensive, but the effect is unparalleled in color depth and reflection of light.
From the crown moulding to the antiqued mirrored glass on the cabinets, there are interesting details everywhere the eye falls—notice the way the tops of the mirrors are rounded rather than squared off. Sconces are a decorative way to layer the light, and privacy is at your fingertips with electric blinds. Other special touches include a luxe modern tub and a small vanity with a television and seating—this is a bathroom built to use.
