Custom Freestanding Cabinetry Creates Great Spaces
October 1, 20142014 AIA Houston Home Tour
October 15, 2014We are incredibly fortunate to live in a city as large and diverse as Houston, and that’s particularly true for design lovers. Houston has it all! From architecture, to museums, to a rich and varied theater scene, we truly are a world-class city. In our November newsletter we will be sharing information on a few can’t-miss museum exhibits featuring the decorative arts, and so for today’s blog we wanted to expand on that idea. Where in Houston can design lovers go to fuel their passion for design?
Shop ‘Til You Drop
There are a seemingly-endless number of places to shop for your home in Houston, but few are as much fun to explore as Kuhl-Lindcomb. Their five showrooms are home to a huge collection of furniture, housewares, and home décor—from modern to retro, virtually every shopper will find beautiful pieces to satisfy their personal style and taste.
If you are an antique lover, you will likely find your next treasure at Antiques of River Oaks. Their 9000-foot showroom is a beautiful space in and of itself, and you can’t beat their staff when it comes to experience—they are among the very best, and can help you navigate the almost endless maze of treasures.
The Place to Be—and See
Some of the best design inspiration is not inside these buildings—it’s the buildings themselves. We have no shortage of gorgeous buildings in Houston—and a few quirky ones as well. We love to send visitors to these spots when they are looking for fun and functional places to visit:
-
The Beer Can House is a true Houston original, just like its owner/designer John Milkovisch, who started covering his house in beer cans and tabs back in 1968. Today, Houstonians and visitors alike flock to see the small house that is whimsically adorned with all manner of aluminum!
-
The Rothko Chapel is a beautiful meditation space that also houses artwork, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. On their website, the Rothko Chapel describes their vocation as two-fold—contemplation, and action.
It’s Just Natural
Lest you think we’re ignoring the potential of beautifully designed outdoor spaces, we also consider the following sites “must-see” destinations for anyone in Houston:
-
The Miller Outdoor Theater is always an impressive sight, but never more so than when you’re sitting on the lawn, taking in a show or a movie. Visit during the day to enjoy everything the Museum District has to offer, but make sure you attend a production. It’s such fun to take in a musical or concert al fresco.
-
If you’re visiting Miller Outdoor Theater in Hermann Park, you’re almost there so continue on to the Japanese Garden on the other side of the park. This quiet, reflective space is located in the heart of the city—an oasis for visitors and residents alike.
