May 1, 2012Just like the laundry room, your closet is a hidden room in your house but one where organization is
incredibly important. Often times we overlook our closets because they are out of sight. When clients
come to us requesting a bedroom renovation, a more organized closet is a frequently-expressed
desire. We can help when it comes to great closet organization solutions; today’s home storage and
organization products are highly customizable. We will discuss your lifestyle, your closet, and your
storage needs to create the perfect fit, whether you have a walk-in or a reach-in closet. Do you need
to reorganize a closet in a room other than your bedroom? We can customize a closet space anywhere
in your home: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen pantry, utility or laundry room, garage, or family/common
room. Stop into our showroom to see examples of how you can create a more organized closet for any
room in your home, but in the meantime, we will share a few tips for what you can do—right now—to
make your closet a more usable space.
1. Purge: Regularly cleaning out your closet is not the most fun task in the world, but there is
hardly a room in your house that will collect clutter faster. Donate items you no longer wear to a
charitable organization and enjoy a tax deduction, too.
2. Hangers & Shoes: Good hangers keep your clothes in great shape, longer. They are a little
more expensive than cheap wire hangers, but the extra mileage you get out of your clothes
is worth it. The right hangers also reduce the amount of ironing you have to do—a real time-
saver. At Cabinets & Designs, we carry a pull-down wardrobe lift, allowing easier access to
hanging clothing. We also have pull-out slack racks to keep your pants in perfect order. When
it comes to shoes, there are many ways to organize. Some people prefer to keep shoes in their
original boxes, others use hanging storage, and still others prefer clear storage bins so they can
quickly see and select the shoe they want. We have a variety of shoe storage options, including
adjustable, angled, and pull-out shoe shelves. We can and have created custom shoe storage
based on exact shoe heights, including flats, heels, and (of course!) cowboy boots.
3. Seasonal Rotation: Stash unused items away when they are out of season. Moving bulky
sweaters and coats out of the way during warm months saves a lot of room, and removing
swimsuits and shorts from the rotation during winter months mean less digging for other base
items you wear year-round, like tank tops and t-shirts.
4. Think small: Belts, ties, socks, cufflinks, jewelry, lingerie, swimwear, hats, scarves, purses—small
items that can end up causing big delays when you have to hunt through your closet to find the
right one. Use hangers, drawers, storage cubes, and wall hooks to keep these items easy-to-find
and within reach. Cabinets & Designs has pull-out tie, belt, and scarf racks; maple and acrylic
drawer dividers for socks and undergarments; jewelry trays are perfect for everything from
bracelets to cufflinks.
