November 6, 2014Dining Out for Thanksgiving in Houston
November 19, 2014This week on the blog we’re taking a break from our favorite home renovation topics to share some important information for the holiday season. While many of us have days full of family, friends, football, and food to look forward to, Thanksgiving doesn’t mean a warm home and full belly for everyone. Houston is a city with a big heart, which means there are many ways all of us can help those in need this holiday season.
Houston Food Bank Holiday Cards with Hope
The Holiday Cards with Hope campaign through the Houston Food Bank allows you to order either printed or e-cards, with the proceeds used to help provide meals to those in need. There are several ways to shop this promotion, including an option to make a donation in someone’s honor.
TXU Energy Houston Turkey Trot
Start Thanksgiving Day off with some exercise for a good cause and sign up to run the TXU Energy Houston Turkey Trot. You can choose from a 5k or 10k run, and there’s a fun kids’ run as well. The race starts at 7 a.m., which gives you plenty of time to work up an appetite and get home in time to help set the table. The trot is looking to break their record of 15,000 runners this year—you could help set a record, and raise money for Neighborhood Centers, Inc.
City Wide Club Annual Thanksgiving Big Super Feast
The City Wide Club is seeking volunteers for both shifts for this year’s Annual Thanksgiving Big Super Feast—the 36th annual, held at George R. Brown Convention Center. The City Wide Club is also seeking donations of non-perishable food items along with turkeys, hams, breads, commercially-prepared baked goods, and more to help them help others this holiday season.
Meals on Wheels Seeks Thanksgiving Volunteers
You can sign up now to become a Thanksgiving volunteer with Houston Meals on Wheels through Interfaith Ministry. In addition to delivery, you can also opt to work at the distribution site. Meals on Wheels Houston is also accepting donations; for just $25 you can feed five homebound seniors receive Thanksgiving dinner.
Volunteer Houston: The Holiday Project
Sign up for The Holiday Project with Volunteer Houston to visit local nursing homes on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteers will meet at one of three different locations—Katy, Cy-Fair, and Central Houston—and organized into teams which each visit one facility. There is no minimum age for participation, so this would be great for the whole family.
Generosity and compassion are on display every single day in Houston, and the holidays mean we can all answer the call to go a little further to help our neighbors. We are wishing you and your families a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season.
