Remodeling Timelines
August 13, 2013Building a Relationship with your Remodeler
August 27, 2013For homeowners, once a remodeling project begins the real emotional work of the experience sets in. Remodeling can be overwhelming, and the bigger the project, the more stress you are likely to feel during the process. Dust, noise, belongings in boxes scattered about the house—these are just a few factors that can trigger what we call “remodeling fever.” Living through a renovation is possible—and dare we say, easy?—if you remember a few things along the way, and keep your eye on the prize: a beautiful new living space in your home.
Manage Your Expectations
Frustration is allowed, and even normal, but don’t let it take you over completely. Remember that the timelines you discuss with designers, contractors, and remodelers are guidelines; remodeling jobs that depend on timing can sometimes incur delays, so try to take it in stride. When handling issues with your remodeling crew—whether it’s an architect, a contractor, or a supplier—try to be patient and calm.
Be Realistic
Remodeling can be a messy undertaking; there will be dust, there will be displaced household items, and there will be people you don’t know very well coming in and out of your home. Delays and changes of plans are possible along the way—try to roll with the punches and remember that you are lucky to have a team of professionals on your side. They have been through this before, and their expertise is an asset.
Think Ahead
Identify ways to make the process easier before it starts. When you plan ahead and stay organized, you can avoid many of the smaller pitfalls of the remodeling process. If you are having work done in or near an office, consider moving things like computers, cameras, printers, and other sensitive equipment to another area altogether. If you won’t have use of your kitchen, designate an area where you can keep snacks, a microwave, and other quick-fix kitchen essentials around for meal or snack time.
Don’t let remodeling fever get you down! That excitement you felt when you first started planning may wane during the renovation process, but the finished result is always worth the wait.
