July 10, 2012Remodeling Tips and Suggestions
July 25, 2012You know that feeling—we’ve all had it. Your home is undergoing some sort of major remodeling project, and you suddenly feel like there is no end in sight; you’re irritable and tired—the technical term for what you are in is “a funk.” This overwhelming sense of fatigue is triggered by the dust-covered surfaces of your home; the stacks of your belongings shoved into corners and stacked against walls, the seemingly never-ending march of contractors and sub-contractors moving in and out of your house. No matter how patient you are, no matter how practical and sensible your thought process before the renovation started, a long remodeling job can take its toll.
So, how do you survive—nay, thrive in such an environment? How can you live through renovation to see the room (or home) you have held in your mind’s eye for so long? Here are a few techniques our clients have found helpful over the years.
Keep Your Expectations in Check
Don’t let frustration get the best of you. Remember timelines are guidelines, and remodeling jobs that depend on timing can sometimes incur delays. When handling issues with your remodeling crew—whether it’s an architect, a contractor, or a supplier—try to be patient and calm. The thing about catching more flies with honey than vinegar… It’s true.
Be Realistic
The truth is, a remodeling project is going to be messy; there will be dust, there will be displaced household items, and there will be people you don’t know very well coming in and out of your home. Delays and changes of plans are possible along the way—try to roll with the punches and remember that you are lucky to have a team of professionals on your side. They have been through this before, and their expertise is an asset.
Think Ahead
Pinpoint ways to make the process easier before it starts. There will be a stubbed toe or a hard-to-find box at some point, but if you plan ahead a bit and stay organized, you can avoid small (but annoying) pitfalls of the remodeling process. If you are having work done in or near an office, consider moving things like computers, cameras, printers, and other sensitive equipment to another area altogether.
Don’t let remodeling fever get you down—that euphoria you felt when you first started planning may flag during the renovation process, but we promise you’ll reclaim it when you see the finished product.
